Project L/EARN presents to member of President Obama’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology
Feb. 2011. Dr. Sylvester James Gates, Jr. – a member of President Obama’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology – paid a visit to Rutgers to provide feedback on the University’s efforts to diversify the sciences. Programs presenting to Dr. Gates included Project L/EARN, ODASIS, and RISE. Faculty Director Jane Miller gave an overview of the program and its goals, Dr. Dawne Harris Mouzon spoke about the program’s curriculum, and Dr. Yamalis Diaz described its approach to enhancing participants’ research and training networks. Drs. Diaz and Harris Mouzon are both Project L/EARN alumni and former members of the instructional staff who will be starting tenure track faculty positions this year. Other alumni who described their Project L/EARN experiences to Dr. Gates included Timothy Hairston, Jr. (L/EARN 2010), Jose Nova (L/EARN 2003), and Jacqueline Palmer (L/EARN 2008).

Impressed by Project L/EARN’s track record, Dr. Gates remarked that the program’s curriculum and approach could serve as a model for other programs aimed at diversifying the sciences. He made suggestions about future funding, media coverage, and networking.
