The Importance of Relationships with Neighbors for the Well-being of Midlife and Older Adults: Evidence from a U.S. National Study
Emily Greenfield, Ph.D.
Associate Professor
School of Social Work

Laurent Reyes is a rising senior at Rutgers University. She majors in Women and Gender Studies and Social Work. Laurent aspires to complete a Masters in community or international development. She will use this degree to start a non-governmental organization, working with communities in the area of gender rights.

Laurent decided to participate in Project L/EARN because she was interested in pursuing graduate school and wanted to be involved in and learn about the research process. The most challenging part of Project L/EARN for Laurent was managing time appropriately in order to complete the heavy course load. As she nears the end of the program she now knows a lot more about research and opportunities available in her field of study. She already has ideas about future projects and additional researchers she would like to work with.

Laurent worked with Dr. Emily Greenfield this summer. Her project looks at the influences of relationships with neighbors on the psychological well being of mid-life and older adults living in community. She enjoyed sharing and discussing her ideas with Dr. Greenfield. Laurent states, “She made me feel like I was included in the process. She was extremely patient and understanding with me and I really appreciated that.”
