Patricia Calixte-Civil is a rising senior at Rutgers University, where she majors in Psychology and is an Edward Greenfield and Ronald E. McNair Scholar. Patricia’s career goal is to attain a PsyD or a Ph.D. in clinical psychology in order to become a clinical psychologist, as well as to research culture specific substance abuse treatments in under privileged communities. Patricia applied to Project L/EARN, because she wanted an opportunity to gain experience in conducting health and particularly psychology research.
Patricia explained that the most important thing that she learned during the program was the value of always checking and ensuring the accuracy of work. She enjoyed working with her faculty mentor, Dr. Ayorkor Gaba, because she felt that it was beneficial to work with someone who has expertise in her topic of interest, as well as being able to have a mentor with whom to discuss possible career paths.
Patricia’s expressed that the hardest part of the program was balancing work on her individual project with the additional class assignments. However, she explained that spending time with her cohort acted as a form “constant reinforcement and encouragement” in completing the program. “Project L/EARN is only the start…”
