Is there Adverse Self-Selection of Children with Special Health Care Needs in New Jersey FamilyCare?

Tamarie is a rising senior at Rutgers College, where she majors in Public Health. She is a true scholar-athlete, she is the recipient of a Rutgers Volleyball team scholarship. Tamarie’s research interests focus on social policy, particularly as they affect children. She is also interested in race/ethnic disparities, socioeconomic disparities and educational reform.

Her summer has been even busier than most interns, as she has juggled this very demanding program, and attempted to stay in top shape for the upcoming Volleyball season. This year, Tamarie is also being nominated for the very prestigious Rhodes scholarship. Tamarie comes from a very disciplined family. Her father is a retired Lieutenant Colonel and her older sister is an attorney. This influence is evident in her work ethic and her academic and athletic achievements to date.

As a Project L/EARN intern this summer, Tamarie valued the mentorship she received from Dr. Jane Miller, with whom she studied adverse retention in NJ FamilyCare among children with special health care needs. She also enjoyed the friendships and bonds she made this summer with her fellow interns. Upon graduation, she plans to attend a doctoral program in Public Policy, which will allow her to make a difference in the world. Tutoring Latino and African American children at the downtown Public Library has shown her how early economic and ethnic disparities begin in education. As a result she is determined to make a change at the policy level to ensure all children—regardless of race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status or health conditions start on an equal playing field.
