Naa Oyo A. Kwate, Ph.D.

Naa Oyo A. Kwate is Associate Professor in the Departments of Human Ecology and Africana Studies. Prior to coming to Rutgers, she was in the Department of Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. She holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from St. John's University and a B.A. in psychology from Carleton College. Dr. Kwate is a recipient of a National Institutes of Health 2009 New Innovator Award, in which she is investigating the health effects of multiple levels of racism. In a project funded by the RWJF Investigator Award in Health Policy, she is investigating the impact of belief in the "American Dream" on African American health. Generally, her research centers on psychological and social determinants of African American health, with particular attention to identity, inequality, and neighborhood context. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program.
