Alan C. Monheit (Ph.D., City University of New York) is Professor of Health Economics and Chair, Department of Health Systems & Policy in the School of Public Health, Rutgers University. He is also the Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs and director of the school’s Center for Health Economics and Health Policy. Professor Monheit is also a research professor at the Institute and its Center for State Health Policy He has held research positions in the Health Policy Institute and School of Medicine at Boston University, and was the director of the Division of Social and Economic Research in the Center for Cost and Financing Studies, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). His research interests include the relationship between employment and health insurance coverage, family health care responses to economic shocks, health reform and the regulation of health insurance markets, children's access to health care, and the relationship between socioeconomic status and health. His published work has appeared in a number of professional journals including Inquiry, Health Affairs, Health Economics, the Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Health Economics, Journal of Public Economics, the Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Medical Care, Health Services Research, and Medical Care Research and Review. While at AHRQ, Professor Monheit served as a member of President Clinton's Health Reform Task Force, received the Administrator's Award for Health Services Research, and was appointed to the Department of Health and Human Services Senior Biomedical Research Service. Professor Monheit has served as editor of Inquiry: The Journal of Health Care Organization, Provision, and Financing and is a member of its editorial board, and is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, a fellow of the Employee Benefit Research Institute, and an elected member of the National Academy of Social Insurance. He is a co-editor of, State Insurance Market Reform: Toward Inclusive and Sustainable Health Insurance Markets, and an editor and contributor to the volume, Informing American Health Care Policy: The Dynamics of Medical Expenditure and Insurance Surveys, 1977-1996. Professor Monheit also received the New Jersey Health Foundation’s Excellence in Research Award for the 2015-2016 academic year.
