Project L/EARN Intern of the Year Award named for Peter Guarnaccia

In honoring Dr. Peter Guarnaccia for his dedication to developing and overseeing Project L/EARN, a new award for best intern of the year has been created. The Peter J. Guarnaccia Award recipient will be chosen annually from each summer’s cohort of Project L/EARN interns by vote of their peers based on rankings of dedication, passion, tenacity and work ethic, characteristics that Dr. Guarnaccia has brought to the program and modeled to the interns in his role as director, lecturer, writing workshop teacher, and mentor.

The first recipient was Project L/EARN intern, Samia Ortiz-Hernandez, Dr. Guarnaccia’s intern during this past summer’s program and a student from the University of Puerto Rico.

Dr. Guarnaccia is a medical anthropologist at the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research and the Department of Human Ecology. Recently he stepped down after 12 years as Faculty Director of Project L/EARN under funding from the National Institutes of Mental Health. He plans to return as a faculty mentor after a well-deserved sabbatical in 2009. Project L/EARN is an intensive summer research program for undergraduate students from groups that have been under-represented historically in graduate education and health research careers.
