Judith Lucas and colleagues in the Institute’s Center for Pharmacology, Chronic Disease Management and Outcomes were awarded second place in their poster presentation at the recent silver anniversary meeting of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) held in Providence, RI. Their study, “Antipsychotic Medication Use among Nursing Home Residents: Guideline Consistency” showed that almost half of residents in nursing homes were prescribed antipsychotic medications in the absence of CMS-approved indications. Residents not meeting guideline consistent use were more likely to be male, black, without family contact and with dementia, anxiety and severe cognitive impairment. More often these residents resided in nursing homes with a high percentage of Medicaid funding, a higher number of deficiencies and with less RN staffing. Considerable variation existed across the states. This research is supported by AHRQ and The Research Retirement Foundation.
